Attie Submissions

August 17, 2009

Dear readers,
I’m opening the Atties for reader submissions. Next week’s winner has already been decided, but we are wide open after that.
When you submit an Attie, keep in mind the nominee has to especially qualify in the areas of bad reasoning, bad history, bad science, or badness in general. Is that vauge enough? Good. Get to it. Send me your nominations at jweyer179@gmail.com

Oh, and I’m looking for someone to create an avatar for the award. So, submit them and I will pick a winner. Your reward will be a free beer or some such spirit if you ever get to the C-BUS.

Doubtfully,
J-

Hmm. Not sure to what extent they would qualify personally, but… For seeding the current crop of Christian Attie award candidates, I nominate Mel and Norma Gabler. (If the first word that comes to your mind is “Who?”, there’s a brief introduction within an interesting article here.)

It’s a bit of a clusterf*ck, but I’d like to nominate Andrew Layton Schlafly, son of Conservative icon Phyllis Schlafly and creator of Conservapedia, where his latest project when he’s not lying to children is to rewrite the Bible so it’s more Conservative. You know, the way Jesus meant it to be.

    Conservapedia is here.
His rewriting of the Gospel of Mark is here. Make sure you haven’t eaten recently.

I’d link you to a rather thorough look at the man himself on Rationalwiki, but it appears to be down at the moment. Unfortunately, the site owner is away so it might be down for a while. In a nutshell, went to Harvard law school same time as Obama, but quickly failed at that, ending up shilling for quack organization AAPS. He went into homeschooling and apparently as part of a class project started up Conservapedia. It quickly went beyond anything the kids were doing, and as the blogs started noticing it and making fun of it, he surrounded himself with people of questionable sanity (including well-known troll Ken DeMyer and others). It’s eventually become what it is today, a testament to dysfunctionality, extreme right-wing distortion of reality and a really warped vision of Christianity. In this world, Liberals are barely human, and at the most charitable they’re brain damaged. It’s like Tom Estes writ large, and he certainly deserves an Attie for his efforts there, as well as his efforts as the AAPS lawyer to push demonstrably false ideas such as an abortion/breast cancer links and anti-vaccination hysteria.

Ah, here’s what I was looking for. The Conservative Bible Project.

    Jonathan,
I didn’t find your email address, but you can find my avatar submission here: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/xJpS-3Y9D3mfBWDRPQRQFg?feat=directlink

I went with the No Sacred Cows idea rather than attack dogs (and you will note which end of the cow is prominently featured). I am not too sure about the text, but the text would be easy enough to change.

There is a Creative Commons license on the original Cow image; I asked for and obtained permission to use it.
